Dr Hughes, Professor Herrick and Mr Muir have contributed a chapter to a textbook on Critical Limb Ischaemia. This has just been published by Springer Verlag.
Hand surgery teaching day
Mr Naqui and Mr Muir will be hosting a teaching day in the Mayo building at Salford Royal on 6 September 2016. The programme includes talks, a presentation by Mr Donald Sammut and our own quiz, pitting orthopaedic surgeons against plastic surgeons.
Latest publication
Mr Muir has joined the rheumatology team of Dr Akram and Dr Hughes for this latest paper. Published in BMJ Case Reports it describes a case of gouty and infective tenosynovitis - a very rare problem. The paper is readily accessible online via this link to BMJ Case Reports.
European Board of Hand Surgery
Mr Muir has taken over as co chairman of the board of examiners for the Diploma of the European Board of Hand Surgery. He joins Dr Martin Richter from Bonn and Dr Frederik Verstreken from Antwerp. All three pay tribute to the efforts of the retiring chairman, Professor Maurizio Calcagni from Zurich.
Diploma exam of the EBHS
Mr Muir has been examining for the above diploma in Santander, Spain. The diploma exam includes a written exam and two oral exams. Candidates come from across Europe and indeed from further afield. The board of examiners is made up from examiners from several different countries. Next year's examination will be in Budapest.

Miss Rymaruk, Mr Murphy and Mr Muir have had published a letter in the Bone and Joint Journal in respect of a paper on tourniquet pain.
Instructional Course in Hand Surgery
The next course is just one week away. It covers wrist, occupational and medico legal aspects. Full details are available on the BSSH website. It will still be possible to register for the Friday and Saturday. The wrist arthroscopy masterclass is fully subscribed. Mr Muir is talking on wrist fusion as well as chairing a session.
We shall also be previewing the next course in February 2017.
EDHS Diploma examination
Mr Muir will be examining in Santander for the above examination. Full details are available from the exam website.

Our latest publication is on reverse hemi hamate arthroplasty in the PIP joint.
The PIP joint is the middle of the three joints of the finger. Often if there is a fracture that runs into the joint the joint can dislocate also. Usually the end of the finger falls off the back of the joint (dorsal fracture dislocation, but in the case reported the tip of the finger displaced towards the palm.
We believe that this is the first ever recorded instance of this technique, which is more normally used for the commoner dorsal fracture dislocation, as described above.

European Board of Hand Surgery (EBHS) diploma exam course
The 2016 course has just been announced. It will be held in the Doubletree by Hilton hotel in Manchester on Thursday 28 January 2016, just before the instructional course. Please see the BSSH website for the details.
The course will give participants a clear idea of how the exam is conducted and of the types of questions that will arise. The feedback for this course has been universally excellent. Last year's feedback may be seen here.
